Plant quiz ยท 2 minutes

What should I grow?

Eight quick questions. You get plants that suit your garden and a one-tap plan.

How the quiz picks plants

Your town sets the dates and the length of your summer. In short-season places like Bend or Burns, long-season crops such as winter squash and melons get flagged, and in mild west-side towns more crops can go in for fall.

Space rules out plants that won't fit: trees and big berry bushes need a yard, and sprawling vines need more than a single raised bed. Sun matters most for fruiting crops like tomatoes, squash and beans, which need six hours or more; leafy greens and a few herbs manage with less.

Time and experience push forgiving, low-fuss plants to the top. Goals such as salads, herbs, food that stores or flowers to cut decide what you see first. When you want to start shows what can go in this month, and the last question drops plants that deer or slugs go for first.

Good starting points

For pots on a patio or balcony

For a spot with only part-day sun

Leafy crops and a few herbs cope with three to six hours of sun.

If you only have a few minutes a week

If deer visit your yard

Strong-smelling herbs and the onion family are usually left alone, though no plant is fully deer-proof.
